Skin care myth debunked! Cleansing skin more can help with acne

It is true that excess dirt and oil on your skin can lead to breakouts, so it might seem logical that washing your face more would help get rid of acne. Sorry, if only it were that easy! 

 

There are 4 main causes of acne. 

  • Excess oil production
  • Inflammation
  • Bacterial Overgrowth
  • Comedones

 

Cleansing may help with excess oil production and bacterial overgrowth. But cleansing skin too much or using a harsh cleanser can actually make all 4 of these factors worse. The main reason is because over-cleansing will weaken your skin’s natural protective barrier. You really only need to cleanse once or twice a day with a gentle cleanser with gentle surfactants that won’t irritate your skin. In particular, stay away from foaming cleansers containing SLS!
